What’s new in the October 2021 release of Lightroom Classic

Masking – Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, and Adobe Camera Raw

You’re one click away from delight. Look for the new masking icon. Click on it to open a whole new panel that gives you access to several renamed tools:

  • Brush, the renamed Adjustment Brush

  • Linear Gradient, the renamed Graduated Filter

  • Radial Gradient, the renamed Radial Filter

Before this update, a Range Mask would work with an existing local adjustment tool to refine the affected section of an adjustment in a photo. You can adjust the entire picture or work with other masking tools to create more complex masks with the new Masking tool.

This means you could apply masks such as Color Range, Luminance, and Depth Range. But that’s not all there is. There’s more!

Thanks to AI-based machine learning, you can create two new masks called Select Sky and Select Subject. Clicking on either one uses the technology to analyze the image and produce a smart selection based on the sky or subject.

You can then refine things further using other tools via Add or Subtract – or Invert the Mask to select everything but the sky or subject. When you apply the Mask, you can apply adjustments only to specific areas of the photo without affecting the unmasked regions.
