How To Create Photographs With Meaningful Impact

2. Get creative with your composition

Did you know that how you compose your shot can determine how viewers perceive the image? Composition is the placement and arrangement of subjects in the frame. It’s an element that can bring life and drama to an image. If done correctly, you can create a sense of depth, draw attention to certain details, or even add motion to the photo.

For landscape shots, leading lines are an effective way to guide the viewer’s eye. These can be buildings, fences, stairs, rivers, roads, and even trees. When using leading lines, try to give them a sense of direction. Alternatively, the rule of thirds is an easy-to-remember guideline when shooting portraits. Divide the frame into three sections horizontally and vertically, and position the subject on one of the intersections. It’ll create tension and direct the viewers’ focus to the subject.

Simply put, the composition utilizes creativity to tell a story from the image. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to craft beautiful and powerful visuals.

3. Pay attention to the lighting

Lighting plays an essential role in photography. It can create stunning visuals, add depth and dimension to the background, and draw more attention to the subject. You can experiment with natural light and artificial sources, depending on the photo you’re going to take.

Most photographers prefer natural light, as it can be more realistic and flattering, especially for outdoor shoots. Take photos during golden hour—before sunset and after sunrise—as the ambient light is forgiving and desirable. This will make your pictures look soft, warm, and more dynamic.

On the other hand, artificial lightings, such as strobes, LED panels, and flashes, are ideal for low-light or night photography and other creative projects. They can give off an ultra-modern feel and make the images more defined and vibrant.

When dealing with light sources, consider the intensity and color temperature. A too-bright background can wash out the details, while a too-dark backdrop will make it difficult to see what’s in focus. Try using a reflector or diffuser to soften the light and produce more balanced shots. The result should be a well-lit image with enough contrast to make the subject matter stand out.

Ultimately, lighting can add life to your images and make them look more professional. Get creative and find out which type of light works best for your pictures.
